SUMMER NEWS 2021 - (PART B).

In image above: a Floating Cities inspiration, by Space & Matter here. Here lays the rest of our selection of important news and updates for the summer period:

- Ex-Indie community, nowadays a multinational conglomerate, Brooklyn-based Etsy acquired the London-based Depop on a 1.6 billion dollar shopping spree. In an effort to enlarge the audience of crafters and vintage sellers paradise galore and eventually expand its control to the booming pre-owned and 2nd-hand market, (provided the generation Z's go-to gender-fluid aesthetics and circular attitude towards fashion hyper-production), the U.S giant took over one more U.K business success story. Casualty or Thumps Up for the British economy, post-Brexit? No concrete answer to that just yet, the sure thing is that the Depop app will go through some major changes in the future, with Etsy incorporating new features of AI derivatives.

- A very impressive evolution in the actual automotive industry, Volvo cars has announced a partnership with the Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB, aimed at developing the production of steel, usually applied up to this current moment in the automotive components manufacturing procedure, without the use of fossil fuels. The so-called HYBRIT project, becomes for the first time one of the most ambitious initiatives for researching the industrial development of steel without fossil fuels, a revolutionary act for the European heavy industry in total, including cars.

- Private aviation companies in the EU are already started to visualize goods delivery through drones (check our relevant post from Web Summit 2019), among the other uses of the technology. In the post-Covid era where logistics and courier services became the no1 sector of focus and exploitation, the AURA U-Space air traffic management project driven by the SESAR JU program will address the safe integration of drones into low-altitude airspace without affecting conventional air traffic operations. Operation-wise this is the first step towards a framework of regulations for aerial activity of small-scale flying vehicles/objects other than aircrafts, inside the urban airspace and potentially towards a liberation of the streets from traffic and accident-friendly transport risks.

- Skogluft (“Forest Air”) has new and expansive schemes coming up. The Norwegian pioneer conveying research for more than 20 years at NASA and the Norwegian University of Environmental and Life Sciences – develops living walls, combining air-purifying plants, integrated daylight lightning and a digital gardener to make garden care easy, without explicit botanical knowledge. A green, natural atmosphere designer, “Skogluft” publication recently published in China, sold to over 100 countries worldwide and translated in 11 languages.

- Portugal Smart Cities Summit in Lisbon, Portugal changes dates: certainly the most important exhibition conference in Europe dedicated to smart, innovative technologies at the service of future cities, the event will eventually take place on the 16th-18th of November 2021 due to the upcoming local elections. Book your entry here

- Another luxury brand goes Green: heritage powerhouse Longchamp launches it’s famous iconing folding bag Le Pliage® in a newly debuted collection, Le Pliage®  Green made from recycled fabric as an alternative to its hard-wearing nylon canvas. Longchamp strongly believes in a sustainable future with the company committing to use exclusive recycled canvas in all of their products by 2023, (check the Le Pliage® new campaign created by legendary art director and designer Sander Plug for Fred & Farid agency here).

SUMMER NEWS 2021- PART A: (Salone del Mobile.Milano Digital Platform, ADI Design Museum, London Tech Week, DW Global Media Forum …).

Here we go again this summer with the first batch of groundbreaking news from the design arena. Fasten your seatbelts and follow the latest developments:

- The presentation of the new Digital Platform for the Supersalone 2021 took place on the 30th of June, attended by the organizers of the fair (screenshot in central photo above). The Virtual Event platform is set to be a New Medium inside the global exhibition design toolbox of systems and devices. As Salone del Mobile.Milano and Italy are considered to be the design world leaders, the blood plasma of the industry holding together and unifying all the important aspects, factors, people of the sector, the platform aims to demonstrate real content not only as a reference database but as a 365-day round  live stream. A hub, a social media account, an interaction space, an editorial exchange and breakup rooms function, plus a convo spot network, the platform is not a substitute of Supersalone physical space designed by Stefano Boeri & his super-talented team, but an independent, supporting entity providing extra facilities to the physical event (the latter will also host a Forest, 3D printing stations and live gatherings of artists/makers/designers and scientists). An innovative, emotional and sustainable Salone del Mobile is awaiting for us this September 5-10th 2021 and we will have lots of things to (re-)discover apart from the essential design of the most important houses and studios on the planet.

- The much anticipated ADI Design Museum was inaugurated on May 25th in Milan, becoming one of the 3 most important museums dedicated to design in Europe, alongside with the London Design Museum and The Vitra. The Migliore + Servetto international studio, ultra-experienced and with multiple assignments and accolades over a prestigious portfolio of exhibition and public spaces design, conveived and designed the permanent exhibition of the museum’ historic Compasso d’ Oro Award Collection along with the museum' brand identity and logo. A new heritage meeting point, full of history and legacy, illustrating in the most fluid and ingenious way some of the milestones of the design production in the continent.

- London Tech Week is returning September 20-24th 2021, to amplify the power, resilience and speed of innovation across UK tech, with more than 20K attendees across 700 sessions with AI powered networking and so much more. Climate Tech, Elevating Founders podcasts, Hybrid Workplaces, CreaTech, Quantum Cybersecurity, MedTech (new innovative AI for cancer pre-diagnosis), you name it , it is going to be there, in one of the hottest upcoming events in the beginning of autumn, heading to November and to the pick of the year: the Web Summit 2021

 - The DW Global Media Forum this June 2021 endorsed many pivotal questions regarding  the future of media, among so may other emergencies. What kind of journalism we need in the future? How do you Design, Finance & Regulate your own private or public Medium or Channel nowadays?  Does journalism needs rescuing and how AI is contributing to the mix? In this unorthodox post-Covid19 pax romana (not) infodemics era,  when medium can only be the Fact and not the message anymore accountability, constructivism, transparency and responsibility can be equally tough for traditional media corporations and independent outlets. Who will survive and continue as a disruption-able, unbiased organization? Prominent journalists, scientists and inventors gathered and exchanged opinions and of course news, regarding startups and some great new engineering: check in photos bellow (from top to bottom) Scewo Bro climping wheelchair, Scorpion 3 flying vehicle soon in the use of police forces in Dubai and ArcaBoard motion machine.
