It is the time of transitions and the Transition eras are always the most perplexing, difficult , overwhelming yet utterly challenging. This noxious last year is the epitome of an epoch of hardship, or another circle of crisis is just around the corner with the pandemic hitting back and expanding to a what seems to be a decade of reshaping everything: economy, society, health, aesthetics, commerce, lifestyle. Technology is a capital factor amidst turmoil and communications are probably the sector that is (used to) move faster than fast.
In this year’s Broadband World Forum the pivotal companies (aka. world giants also included) in Comms appeared decisive and ready to deploy: new strategies, new products, new hardware and software , new solutions for a more inclusive, safest technology for the general public including minors and seniors citizens (:the latter, hammered already as pensioners by a declining economy in continental Europe due to Covid, suffer immensely because of the complicated hyper-digital, new home facilities being not user-friendly/user-transparent to most of them). It is the beginning of a promising future where intelligence in design and deeper understanding of what the user/customer/citizen needs against all costly odds or odd costs can be and will be the pursuit. If not of happiness definitely of communication 4 All.
Here’s what we retained as a key knowledge of what is about to happened and the list of products and companies who blazed a trail and seduced with the digital transformation experience they offer.
-Once available, 5G is expected to be the enabler of the internet of things (IoT), where billions of connected devices, applications and smart objects will share information ubiquitously for the sake of smaller communities as well.
-“Intelligent connectivity will bring significant economic and social benefits but not if operators are burdened with debt,” warned Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA .“So,the message for governments is don’t get short-term greedy to kill the long-term goose.” And that is addressed to influence local governmental policies and of course banks.
“The video space is ripe for innovation with the transition to5G,” declares Ovum senior media analyst Ed Barton*. “Rather than supplementing viewing experiences native to other screens, mobile is set to come into its own as a primary video entertainment distribution channel.” A solution for home-schooling and other educational activities, subject to conditions of course.
-It is the combination of 5G with AI, Cloud and the IoT which have all come to maturity at the same time that is behind this new wave of computing. In different combinations this will unleash the era of Intelligent Connectivity. “5G combined with the Cloud powered by artificial intelligence and computingdistributed from the Cloud to the edge will enable the vision of services like Google Stadia and other mixed reality content to come to life.” (idem*). A serious hand for public administration and national libraries, whenever there is an intention to apply those tools.
-“The digital age is more than ever a human age, where creativity is a super power, and those who see around the corners, who imagine and shape a future, are our super heroes.” Craig Fenton, Google UK Director, Strategy & Operations and he continues “To fully realize the opportunities that AI offers, leaders in both the private and public sector need to appreciate the value of augmenting human capabilities.” Design and designers do benefit technically from the recent developments but their contribution needs to be imperative not only on occasion.
-Telcos will increasingly position their networks as ‘enabling platforms’ for applications, but the question remains exactly who, if it’s not the telco, will generate the significant new revenues from riding on top. (Moinul Islam, Senior Management - Big Data, AI, & ML, Nokia Bell Labs). Governance remains the key and the stake is high for political powers of Good (or not Not-so-Good).
